What "estimated lazy tax" means
The lazy tax figure shown on NeverPayMore is an estimate of the gap between what a typical household in your area pays for electricity and what they could pay on the most competitive available plan.
It is based on two sources:
- AER Annual Retail Market Report 2024–25 — average annual residential electricity bills by distributor region, published by the Australian Energy Regulator.
- Mountain & Rizio, VEPC Working Paper 1909 (2019) — analysis of 48,088 Victorian electricity bills finding that the typical household leaves approximately $281/year (20% of their bill) on the table. Switchers recovered only ~$45 of that gap. Source: Victoria Energy Policy Centre
What this figure is not
- It is not a personalised recommendation for your specific usage profile
- It is not a comparison of specific retailer plans (that is Phase 1)
- It is not personal financial advice
- It does not model solar export, time-of-use tariffs, controlled load, or EV charging (that is Phase 1)
